In Greek mythology, the "cursed throne" story involves Hephaestus, the god of the forge, creating a magical throne for Hera, his mother, as revenge for her mistreatment of him. This throne, trap, or gift, was made of adamantine and once Hera sat on it, she was unable to rise. This trap was designed to punish Hera for her actions towards Hephaestus. Connected to the ‘Chair’ of her childhood, IMW created a 1:4 scale version of this throne. Shimmering marble weighing heavy on the mirror until it eventually breaks.
Maude Wooller meditates on her relationship with shame and confusion brought on by her mother’s depression in the 1st few years of her life. The subsequent ‘curses’ it brought on both their lives, the beauty, the weight, the haunting & the universal damage done by such invisible forces.
